Trust Takes Center Stage in NASA’s Brand Strategy
At a design conference in Croatia, NASA’s creative director David Rager discussed the challenge of maintaining brand trust in the age of AI.
The Paradigms design conference on Obanjan Island in Croatia featured many talks, but David Rager, NASA’s creative director, stood out. He explained how he steers the agency’s visual identity and tackles the challenges of a modern brand.
Rager’s path began in music, where he designed flyers and album covers for his own band and friends. That led to freelance gigs, museum work, a stint at Disney, and eventually a role at NASA after moving to Los Angeles.
At NASA, he oversaw the revival of the iconic ‘worm’ logo and the creation of the Graphics Standards Manual. The 2023 project brought him to the headquarters full‑time, where he now leads the design team.
With AI making image creation faster, authenticity becomes even more critical. Rager stresses that NASA’s credibility relies on strict standards and clear documentation, so every design must be traceable and honest.
Looking ahead, NASA plans to integrate AI tools into its design workflow while keeping trust at the core. Designers and animators can learn from Rager’s approach: use technology to strengthen brand identity without sacrificing transparency.
