Haikou Workers’ Activity Center: A Climate‑Smart Public Complex

The Haikou Workers’ Activity Center on Hainan Island is a public building that responds to the region’s hot, humid climate. Designed by CADG’s Green Architecture Design & Research Institute, it serves as a cultural, sports, and training hub while acting as an urban oasis for the community.

The complex is organized around the "Tree of Life" concept and functions as an "Ecological Settlement." It uses natural cooling, green facades, and water‑recycling systems to keep energy use low in a hot, humid environment.

Inside, cultural, sporting, and educational facilities are integrated into a single space, encouraging community interaction and providing a versatile venue for a range of activities.

The design responds to Hainan’s climate by employing passive ventilation, shade structures, and sustainable materials, reducing the building’s carbon footprint while maintaining comfort.

This project sets a new benchmark for climate‑responsive public architecture in Haikou, showing how thoughtful design can combine aesthetics, functionality, and environmental stewardship.

For designers, animators, and builders, the center illustrates how to blend artistic vision with ecological performance—an example worth watching as similar projects emerge in warm, humid regions.
