Creating Character Illustration
Design and paint an original character from sketch to finished illustration.
Step 1: Concept and Silhouette
Define role, personality, and one visual hook before details — a botanist with oversized gloves, a courier with a glowing pack. Thumbnail 3–4 silhouettes at small size; readable shape beats early detail.
Pick the strongest silhouette and refine posture. Character personality shows in stance — confident wide base, nervous hunched shoulders. Keep thumbnails grayscale to judge shape, not color distraction.
Step 2: Clean Lineart
Lower sketch opacity and ink on a new layer with a hard brush or stabilizer enabled. Vary line weight: thicker on outer contours, thinner on inner folds.
Close gaps in lineart if you plan to fill with bucket tools. Keep lineart on its own layer above color fills so you can recolor without redrawing edges.
Step 3: Flat Colors and Separation
Add flat color layers under lineart — skin, hair, clothing, accessories on separate layers or clipped groups. Flat fills make selection and shadow passes predictable.
Choose a limited palette: base, shadow, highlight, and one accent. Harmony comes from shared hue in shadows rather than pure gray or black.
Step 4: Light and Shadow
Pick one light direction and stay consistent. Paint shadows on Multiply layers with a desaturated cool tone; paint highlights on Overlay or Soft Light with warm accents.
Form shadows follow anatomy — under chin, inner sleeve, boot soles. Cast shadows ground the character on a simple floor shape or gradient.
Step 5: Detail and Texture
Add secondary detail last: fabric folds, badges, dirt, rim light on hair. Use textured brushes sparingly on mask layers so you can fade effects without repainting.
Zoom out often. Details that look good at 400% may disappear at final display size — prioritize readability at the size the asset will ship.
Step 6: Export for Use
Flatten or export PNG with transparency for game and UI use. Save layered PSD as master. Crop to tight bounds and provide 1x and 2x if the pipeline requires retina assets.
Document color hex values and brush notes if handing off to animation or UI teams. The next tutorial packages multiple assets into a cohesive UI and motion pack.
FAQ
Lineart or lineless painting?
Lineart speeds readability for stylized characters and game sprites. Lineless suits painterly portfolios. Pick one approach per project and stay consistent.
How do I avoid muddy shadows?
Shift hue toward cool blue or purple in shadows instead of adding black. Keep shadow layers on Multiply at moderate opacity and build gradually.
What resolution for a character sheet?
2000–4000 px on the longest side covers most screen and print uses. Match export size to final display — oversized files slow iteration without visible benefit.
